But one student can't stand to witness this budding relationship: Ian decides to destroy the friendship between the black boy and the golden girl. By the end of the day, the school and its key players - teachers and pupils alike - will never be the same again.

The tragedy of Othello is transposed to a 1970's suburban Washington schoolyard, where kids fall in and out of love with each other before lunchtime, and practice a casual racism picked up from their parents and teachers. Peeking over the shoulders of four 11 year olds Osei, Dee, Ian, and his reluctant girlfriend Mimi, Tracy Chevalier's powerful drama of friends torn apart by jealousy, bullying and betrayal will leave you reeling.
I had such high hopes for this book. I love a good old fashioned retelling and so was really excited to get a chance to review this. I was disappointed though. Maybe it was because I am not that familiar with the story as I thought I was. But either or, I didn't enjoy it. It was good, don't get me wrong, but I felt like I couldn't really connect to the characters as much as I wanted to. That's just a personal preference.
For years he had grappled with the theories of Freud and Jung while also absorbing the aesthetic of a new generation of modern artists. He had come to believe that who we are is less a matter of what we say, as Freud thought, than what we see.

Rorschach himself was a visual artist, and his test, a set of ten carefully designed inkblots, quickly made its way to America, where it took on a life of its own. Co-opted by the military after Pearl Harbor, it was a fixture at the Nuremberg trials and in the jungles of Vietnam. It became an advertising staple, a cliché in Hollywood and journalism, and an inspiration to everyone from Andy Warhol to Jay-Z. The test was also given to millions of defendants, job applicants, parents in custody battles, workers applying for jobs, and people suffering from mental illness—or simply trying to understand themselves better. And it is still used today.

Damion Searls draws on unpublished letters and diaries, and a cache of previously unknown interviews with Rorschach’s family, friends, and colleagues, to tell the unlikely story of the test’s creation, its controversial reinvention, and its remarkable endurance—and what it all reveals about the power of perception. Elegant and original, The Inkblots shines a light on the twentieth century’s most visionary synthesis of art and science.<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 14px;">

han Based on Maja Säfström's delightful book The Illustrated Compendium of Amazing Animal Facts, this collection of 50 collectible postcards is the perfect way for animal lovers and art lovers to share and collect Maja's charming illustrations.

Housed in a keepsake box and arranged, much like a recipe box or card catalog, in tabbed sections (air, forest, sea, etc) this posctard box lets the user share all the curious knowledge and amazing artwork that makes Maja's book so special. From the Otters (they hold hands when they sleep in the water so they don't float away from each other!) to the elephant (mother elephant pregnanices last two years!) each postcard presents a unique look at the animal kingdom that will delight and astound. 50 postcards; 25 designs repeating, printed on toothy uncoated stock, with the animal's biological classifcation on the back.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I got these, but after I opened it, I was surprised. These are the most beautiful postcards I have ever seen, I want to paint a set to keep for myself. Very well made and a good mix of animals, I defiantly recommend it.

Did I really want to read a book about so many depressing things? The answer: no. But I read it anyways and I am so glad I did. This book goes over so many hard places of mental illness and self harm showing you the hard reality of it. That for me is always a hard thing to read, I don't do self harm but so many people do and I want to understand them better. This wont be the first or the last book I read about this or a like subject.
This was a hard read. Its hard to explain this book, but it was overall a good book.
The writing was good, the story line, well done and thought through. Overall, I wouldn't want to read it again, but was worth the read.
Eleanor’s family is left in tatters: her mother retreats inward, seeking comfort in bottles; her father reluctantly abandons ship. Eleanor is forced to grow up more quickly than a child should, and becomes the target of her mother’s growing rage.

Years pass, and Eleanor’s painful reality begins to unravel in strange ways. The first time it happens, she walks through a school doorway, and finds herself in a cornfield, beneath wide blue skies. When she stumbles back into her own world, time has flown by without her. Again and again, against her will, she falls out of her world and into other, stranger ones, leaving behind empty rooms and worried loved ones.

One fateful day, Eleanor leaps from a cliff and is torn from her world altogether. But bravado comes easy when you have nothing to lose. Now a husband, father, and the tactical leader of the Seers, Remko has never had so much at risk.As he and his team execute increasingly dangerous rescue missions inside the city, they face growing peril from a new enemy. Recently appointed Authority President Damien Gold claims to be guiding a city shaken by rebellion into a peaceful, harmonious future. But appearances can be deceiving. In order to achieve his dangerous ambitions, Gold knows he must do more than catch the rebels--he must destroy the hope their message represents . . . from the inside out. With dissension in his own camp--and the CityWatch soldiers closing in--Remko feels control slipping through his fingers. To protect those he loves, he must conquer his fears and defeat Gold . . . before one of them becomes his undoing.
This one did do it for me and it took me a day or two after I finished it to decide what I didn't like about it. And I finally figured it out, the story felt stretched out a little to much for my taste. Like this and the last book probably could have been made as one book and saved me a little reading time. Just saying. But that and Remko annoyed me a couple of times. Overall it was okay, but I didn't like it as much as the first one. And would only give it like 3 out of five stars.
Young men across the former USSR face violence at home and in the military. So when Odette Meyer’s father is sent to a Nazi work camp, Odette’s mother takes desperate measures to protect her, sending Odette deep into the French countryside. There, Odette pretends to be a peasant girl, even posing as a Christian–and attending Catholic masses–with other children. But inside, she is burning with secrets, and when the war ends Odette must figure out whether she can resume life in Paris as a Jew, or if she’s lost the connection to her former life forever. Inspired by the life of the real Odette Meyer, this moving free-verse novel is a story of triumph over adversity.
This one is great. Set in world war two and based on a true story, it's a hard to put down kind of read, but I feel like it was toned down a bit as far as the graphic parts of the war. But it is for middle school or younger. Overall I really liked it and was worth the read. It's short and written in verse so its a fast read.
Its not in Biblical order, from what I can figure out it's in chronological order. If you're tired of the storylines of our day, and want to understand how your passions, gifts, longings, and your very being find their fulfillment in the One Story, So, What's Your Point? will take you there. I did read the whole thing mind you but didn't enjoy it very much towards the end and here is why. History. I love History but there is a little to much back history or word history to explain all the tiny parts of the story he was telling. Also after awhile I felt like it was starting to drag, a lot. Its only 254 pages if you don't read the extras in the back. But it started dragging after around 160 or so. Not saying it was horrible, but it was not by any means my favorite.
Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him & forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded & completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—& even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—& a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?
I have picked up similar books like this and they were much to sci fi for me, but this one is different. The sciencey stuff is all explained in a way my non science major brain can understand (mostly) and not feel like an idiot. I loved how this was written and Mark makes this book so much better by being very sarcastic the whole time. It was a well thought out plot and had enough good and bad things happen to Mark that it didn't feel unrealistic. Like not everything was bad or everything good happened either, it had a good mix of both. Overall, a great story told with a lot of humor and had a good ending and was overall a great read, just not everyone's piece of cake.
The inheritance of a decaying Gilded Age hotel on North Carolina’s Outer Banks may provide just the ray of hope she needs. But things at The Excelsior are more complicated than they seem. Whitney’s estranged stepfather is entrenched on the third floor, and the downstairs tenants are determined to save the historic building. Searching through years of stored family heirlooms may be Whitney’s only hope of quick cash, but will the discovery of an old necklace and a depression-era love story change everything.
I thought the love story was going to be a wayyyy different one then the one that followed. I liked the story, after awhile I got into it. But after awhile I was almost annoyed, plus there were two typos in the first hundred pages or so. So that annoyed the crap out of me as well, there might have been more I didn't catch. I really had a love hate with Whitney and the way she did things, which was everything but the right way most of the time. And the ending was good but left a lot of holes. So in the end, I like it but found more problems then I ever want to.
I loved the story and the twists and turns in the story, even though a few things were very obvious about what was going to happen, it still had some twists and turns that you don't see coming. The plot was good, the characters showed growth and a new depth as the story progresses and each showed a very different personality and voice. Each character had a different part to play, so even though there are quite a few people in the story, its not really crowded and each side character has there time to share there story too. Over all I really liked this book and felt like it was well executed and well thought out.
